The X-Ray Sensor (XRS) was part of the Space Environment Monitor (SEM) instrument suite on the GOES-14 spacecraft. XRS measured the full-disk solar soft X-ray irradiance in two nominal wavelength bands: XRS-A (0.05-0.4 nm) and XRS-B (0.1-0.8 nm).
The instrument used two gas-filled ionization chambers, one for each wavelength band. Beryllium filters and ion chamber characteristics determined the spectral responses of the two channels. Unlike the GOES-R series XRS instruments, which use silicon photodiodes, the GOES-14 XRS had only one detector per channel and did not provide solar flare location measurements.
XRS measurements were used for monitoring solar X-ray emission and detecting and characterizing solar flares. The GOES-8 through GOES-15 operational irradiances included historical scaling factors that have been removed from the science-quality reprocessed data. Additional calibration differences remain between the GOES-14 and GOES-R XRS measurements.
