<Note>Migrated the instrument record from the SMWG Naming Authority to NOAA, changing the ResourceID from spase://SMWG/Instrument/GOES/15/XRS to spase://NOAA/Instrument/GOES/15/SEM/XRS. Updated the ResourceName, Description, GeneralContact, InformationURL entries, and InvestigationName. Changed InstrumentType from Imager to IonChamber. Added AlternateName, ObservedRegion, and MeasurementType metadata. Retained the former ResourceID as PriorID. Upgraded the record from SPASE 2.2.2 to 2.7.2.</Note>

<Description>The X-Ray Sensor (XRS) was part of the Space Environment Monitor (SEM) instrument suite on the GOES-15 spacecraft. XRS measured the full-disk solar soft X-ray irradiance in two nominal wavelength bands: XRS-A (0.05-0.4 nm) and XRS-B (0.1-0.8 nm).

The instrument used two gas-filled ionization chambers, one for each wavelength band. Beryllium filters and ion chamber characteristics determined the spectral responses of the two channels. Unlike the GOES-R series XRS instruments, which use silicon photodiodes, the GOES-15 XRS had only one detector per channel and did not provide solar flare location measurements.

XRS measurements were used for monitoring solar X-ray emission and detecting and characterizing solar flares. The GOES-8 through GOES-15 operational irradiances included historical scaling factors that have been removed from the science-quality reprocessed data. Additional calibration differences remain between the GOES-15 and GOES-R XRS measurements.</Description>
