The X-Ray Sensor (XRS) is one of the two primary instruments in the Extreme Ultraviolet and X-Ray Irradiance Sensors (EXIS) suite on the GOES-18 spacecraft. XRS measures the full-disk solar soft X-ray irradiance in two wavelength bands. The XRS-A channel covers 0.05-0.4 nm, and the XRS-B channel covers 0.1-0.8 nm.
Each XRS channel uses photodiodes with different sensitivities to measure solar X-ray irradiance over the large dynamic range from solar minimum conditions through large solar flares. Quadrant photodiodes also provide information used to determine solar flare locations.
XRS measurements are used for continuous monitoring of solar X-ray emission and for identifying and characterizing solar flares.
